What Is Ayurveda
Ayurveda is the ancient, medical and wellbeing system from India. Rather than a system it is a holistic science of how to live for maximum physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Ayurveda examines how to live, become healthy, and maintain health, taking into account the wisdom and construct of life that exists all around us.
The word Ayurveda means Science of Life and as such it offers much more than just treatment for ailments or 'dis-ease'. It offers an intelligent way of living and tuning in to your inner and outer environment so that conflict and disease do not occur. Ayurveda observes the individual as unique. Each body mind is different in how we function bio-energetically, therefore there is no ‘one treatment fits all’. At the basis of everything lie the 5 natural elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth, and the 3 Doshas: Vata, Pita, Kapha. The way in which the elements and their unique qualities are expressed in each body mind is the Doshas. Vata is Space and Air. The word means vehicle and is characterised by movement. It has no fire therefore it is cold, no water therefore it is dry. Pitta is fire and water, it is sharp and penetrating, hot and oily. Kapha is water and Earth, It doesn’t have much movement but has stability and strength it is cold but not dry. Each person has a dominant Dosha and this describes the nature of the biophysical processes of that individual. We all have all three Doshas expressed in us but one or a combination is usually dominant. Any condition or disease is the result of a Dosha imbalance.
As it is a priority in Ayurveda to maintain optimal balance of the Doshas and optimal health at all levels, when a condition is being treated, treatment will be given not only to cure the condition but also to bring the Doshas back to balance.
